Screening of "Bottle Shock" (OmU)
About this Event
Bottle Shock is a 2008 American film based on the real-life 1976 “Judgment of Paris” contest, a blind wine tasting that turned the global wine hierarchy upside down. The film, directed by Randall Miller, blends historical facts with light comedic drama, offering a portrait of the Napa Valley at a time when its winemakers were dismissed as amateurs and French vineyards were considered the gold standard.
British sommelier Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) sets out to host a blind wine tasting in Paris to save his struggling wine shop. His plan: introduce Parisians to wines from around the world. In search of participants, Spurrier travels to the then-unknown Napa Valley in California, where he meets the founder and winemaker Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) of Chateau Montelena. There, Spurrier discovers an excellent Chardonnay, but Barrett refuses to participate, believing it to be a trap set by the French to humiliate American winemakers. Barrett’s son Bo (Chris Pine) secretly gives Spurrier a few bottles for the competition — a decision that sets the entire plot in motion and alters the course of wine history.
