Scotland Beyond Net Zero - Rural District Heating Symposium

District heating systems have significant potential for helping reduce Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions and tackle fuel poverty in Scotland however, our country still lacks any of the 4th generation systems first pioneered in Denmark. 4th generation systems combine large solar thermal arrays and inter-seasonal heat stores, supplemented by renewable and low carbon fuels such as locally sourced biomass and heat pumps. Projects such as those at Marstal and Dronninglund have shown how these systems can provide climate friendly, affordable heating to rural communities, and are ripe for replication in communities such as those in the Scottish Borders. So how can we make this a reality?

Common Weal, Heriot-Watt University, Glasgow Caledonian University, and the Borders Energy Agency would like to invite you to a free symposium on how to answer this question at HWU’s Galashiels campus and online in April 2024.

Speakers confirmed so far include: Morten Duedahl, DBDH; Sarah Boyack MSP; Ron Mould, Bield / Common Weal Energy Working Group; Robin McAlpine, Founder, Common Weal; and a number of industry representatives. More to be confirmed soon and a full agenda will be published asap in the new year.
