The exquisite Mallarmé songs show Ravel at his most experimental, exploring the modernist sound world of Stravinsky and Schoenberg. Then, music by Ravel's teacher, Gabriel Fauré: his elegiac trio, composed in 1923. Julius Eastman, the iconoclastic American composer and pianist, has been rediscovered in recent years as a minimalist pioneer.
