Only two works on tonight’s program, both composed by consummate musical innovators. In Josef Haydn’s hands, the string quartet went from being a minor genre to the most complex and prestigious chamber music form. Steve Reich had a similarly seismic effect on music in the late 20th Century. In his minimalist masterwork, Drumming, beautiful interlocking rhythms form a mesmeric sonic geometry.JOSEF HAYDN: String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76, No. 2 (24’)
