Join Alana, the owner and innkeeper of Watergrasshill B&B, in the kitchen studio for an engaging and hands-on culinary experience where you will discover the delightful art of creating homemade scones and luscious jam from scratch! Together, we will delve into the entire canning process, covering each step along the way. We will explore the process of preparing fresh fruit, boiling it to achieve the perfect consistency, safely canning the jam, and processing the jars to ensure a long-lasting shelf life.Throughout this hands-on session, you'll learn:
-How to bake fresh scones from scratch, the importance of technique in achieving that perfect fluffy texture, and the art of flavoring your scones with various additions such as dried fruits, nuts, or even chocolate chips. Alana will share her personal tips and tricks to ensure your scones rise beautifully and have a delightful crumb.
-How to make and can berry jam. Though we will make 1 type of jam in class, we will discuss different types of fruits that can be used, the best practices for selecting ripe fruit, and the balance of sugar and acidity that makes for a deliciously sweet and tangy spread. You will also learn about the method of preserving jam, and the importance of sterilizing jars to prevent spoilage.
By the conclusion of this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to sample the scones and jam we've made together. Additionally, you'll take home your own half-pint jar of jam, crafted during the session, along with your recipes and notes, enabling you to recreate the experience at home!
