SCNP Certificate Elective: Invasive Plants & Pests/Diseases 6.26.26
About this Event
Discount available to SCNPS and SCBG members. See details below.
Join Sharleen Johnson, founder of Native Plants to the People LLC, for a day of learning about the subset of non-native plants and plant-pests/diseases that are most harmful to South Carolina’s native plant communities, wildlife, and local biodiversity. What characteristics make a plant or other organism “invasive”? By what mechanisms do invasives arrive, spread, and cause harm to native plants and wildlife? Which species are most common and problematic in South Carolina’s Coastal Plain (and other parts of our state), who is responsible for categorizing invasive plants and pests in our state, and how do they go about this task? How can we reduce the spread of invasive species, as well as effectively remove or treat invasive plants already present on our properties? What resources are available for invasive plant identification and management? We’ll start the day in the Clemson TEACH Center classroom (in Charleston’s Citadel Mall), and spend part of the afternoon in the field, identifying some of the invasive plant species we discussed as well as native plant look-alikes.
