Kicking things to infinity: Kant on the priority of land ownership

This paper examines section 12 of Kant's Doctrine of Right and argues for the normative priority of land ownership with respect to other property rights.


Ralf Bader is professor of philosophy at the Université de Fribourg in Switzerland, where he holds the chair for ethics and political philosophy. His research focuses on ethics, meta-ethics, metaphysics, Kant, political philosophy and decision theory. He is also interested in neo-Kantian and early analytic philosophy, as well as the history of political thought. Previously, he was a Fellow of Merton College and an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of Oxford, as well as a Bersoff Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow in the Philosophy Department at New York University. Prof Bader has held visiting positions at Princeton University, at UT Austin (as a Harrington Faculty Fellow) and at the IFFS in Stockholm. He received his Ph.D. and M.Litt. from the University of St Andrews and did his undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Oxford (St Edmund Hall).
