Science together: The West of Scotland Herring Hunt Project
About this Event
This talk explores how the West of Scotland Herring Hunt (WOSHH) brought together scientists, fishers, local organisations and coastal communities to track herring (sgadàn) using a mix of cutting-edge science, local ecological knowledge and targeted ad hoc field work to locate herring spawning beds.
Since the 1970s west coast herring populations have declined sharply. The unexpected spotting of large spring-spawning shoals off Wester Ross in 2018 rekindled hope for population recovery. The talk highlights why fragile seabed habitats are vital for herring recovery, wider biodiversity and future marine management.
This talk will take place at Hyndland Secondary School, Clarence Drive, Glasgow, G12 9RQ. Parking is available in the school yard. Children over 8 years old are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. The venue has disabled access. No dogs please except assistance dogs.
