A Summer of Space – Holiday Club for Space explorers age 7 -11
About this Event

Space explorers embark on hands-on Space-themed projects, science and engineering investigations and outdoor woodland adventures at the Science Oxford Centre. Experience our out-of-this-world planetarium show in our inflatable science dome; discover more about the Solar System and our place within it, and design rockets and rovers for intergalactic planetary exploration! Get outdoors in nature and investigate our wildlife and woodland too. Join us for 3 days of exploration and investigation where curiosity and innovation lead the way!

Activities include interactive sessions in the Exploration Zone, woodland and outdoor Water Lab.

Our unaccompanied club runs during the school summer holidays – Tuesday 18th -Thursday 20th August, (OR 25th - 27th August – please note, children can only attend one Holiday Club, not both.)

For children aged 7-11 years.

What’s included in the price:

• Wrap-around care: supervised early drop-off from 8.30am and late pick-up until 4pm.

• A three-day club in the summer holidays from 9am-3.30pm at the Science Oxford Centre, Headington, including access to the Exploration Zone, Water Lab and woodlands (weather dependent).

• Buffet-style lunch is provided, including sandwich, fruit, crisps, juice and chocolate bar*.

*If your child has allergies, we cannot guarantee that our café can cater for them, so we recommend you bring a packed lunch for your child.

• The club is led by our experienced staff.

• All materials and equipment included.

Please note:

• Please bring a (named) water bottle.

• Children will need suitable (named) clothing for both indoors and outdoors. A spare change of clothes is recommended for the Water Lab.

•Medic*tion if required.

Science Oxford welcomes all children to our events. If your child has additional needs, please complete the booking form with more information or email us on [email protected] to see how we can best support your child to make the most of their time with us.

At this time we cannot accept childcare vouchers and we are not part of the Tax-Free Childcare scheme.

Schedule: (subject to change)

Day 1: Introduction and Exploration

  • Introduction, getting to know each other through space-related activities and exploring the scale of the Solar System.
  • Pond dipping – identifying the life living in our ponds and thinking about how we would classify new life if we found it on a new planet.
  • Water workshop – finding out more about this vital element and discovering why it’s so crucial to life.
  • Exploring rovers (including beebots!). Can you program them to navigate tricky planet terrain?

Day 2: Discovery and Design

  • Designing and making your own rover capable of exploring a new planet.
  • Space stop motion – design your own short space movie!
  • Planetarium show – inside our inflatable dome you’ll be immersed in the wonders of our solar system.
  • Time to explore our Exploration Zone and Water Lab at your own pace.

Day 3: Planet and Solar System exploration

  • Exploring rockets – can you make one that will go the furthest?
  • Exploring the Solar System through poetry, rap or song. Which planet will win in our rap battle?
  • Woodland exploration - guided nature walk to explore our 15 acres of green space and woodland, linked to exploring new worlds and the skills we would need.
  • Project showcase - share your discoveries and creations. Reflection and celebration of achievements.
