For October's Science Café, join us for the opening of an exhibit where art meets science featuring the work of artist Judith Greavu. Sculptures from Judith's Florida Springs series, in the mediums of kiln-cast glass and bronze, focus on Florida's beautiful yet imperiled springs and will be on display at the museum through May 2025.
Additionally, Director Ryan Smart of the Florida Springs Council will be speaking on the environmental threats our native springs face and how we can protect them for years to come.
The gallery opening and social begin at an earlier time this month (5-6PM) to allow visitors extended time to enjoy the new exhibit. At 6PM, the lecture in the RELC will start off with a short artist's statement followed by the presentation by Director Smart about the issues facing our springs.
Judith Greavu grew up in Volusia County and her early experiences with nature had a lasting influence on her sculptures. Her first visit to Juniper Springs at 7 years old initiated her fascination with Florida's springs. Judith received her MFA from Bowling Green State University and teaches at Ohio Northern University. Her academic studies and teaching career have kept her in Indiana and Ohio for many decades, but Florida remains a strong inspiration in her work.
Ryan Smart took the helm as FSC's first Executive Director after having served as the Director of the Florida Conservation Coalition and President of 1000 Friends of Florida. He holds a Master's in Water Policy & Public Administration from the University of Florida, where he was honored for his environmental advocacy work as the 2017 University of Florida Bob Graham Center Young Floridian of the Year. The Florida Springs Council is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that advocates for Florida's springs and spring-fed waterways through litigation, education, and legislation. Their mission is to build the power, influence, and resources of springs advocates across the state to protect Florida's springs now and for future generations.
