After years of delay, the James Webb Space Telescope, was launched on Christmas Day 2021. Another six months later, after first a 1.5 million kilometer long journey to its destination, cooling down to a few degrees above the absolute zero, and calibration and commissioning of its instruments, in July it was finally able to show us its stunning view of the Universe.A successor to the well-known Hubble Space Telescope, Webb is much more than that. With its infrared detectors — built in particular to detect planets around other stars, and the most distant and hence earliest galaxies — it has already shown us hitherto unexplored corners of the Universe.
Danish researchers have played a significant role in the telescope's development, and participate in more than ⅓ of the observational program during its first orbit around the Sun.
In this talk we will take a look at James Webb's technology, what it has accomplished till now, and what we will learn in the future.
Our speaker, Peter Laursen has a PhD in Astrophysics and is Senior Science and Communication Coordinator at the Cosmic Dawn Center (DAWN), University of Copenhagen.
DAWN is an international research center for Astrophysics. The center is a collaboration between DTU and KU and is dedicated to uncovering how and when the first galaxies, stars and black holes formed, through observations with the prime telescopes of the next decade (ALMA, JWST, Euclid, E-ELT, HST) as well as through theoretical work and simulations.
