SciArt Field Trip to Deconstructing Landscape at the Thoma Collection

Drawn from the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Foundation collection, the Thoma Collection's new exhibition Deconstructing Landscape features artists who offer unique interpretations of the traditional picturesque landscape across a variety of genres. At a time when our ecosystem is under threat from increasingly fearsome forces, it is especially poignant to see nature through the lens of artistic expression.

Landscape-based art is a vital theme in the Thoma Foundation’s collection, reflecting the Thomas’ deep-rooted connection to the land. From Carl’s upbringing as a third-generation cattle rancher in the Oklahoma panhandle to the couple’s continued stewardship of their New Mexico ranch and Oregon vineyard, the natural world is central to their story.

Featured artists include Terry Adkins, Refik Anadol, Larry Bell, Edward Burtynsky, Judy Chicago, DRIFT, Spencer Finch, Dan Flavin, Guillermo Galindo, John Gerrard, Allison Janae Hamilton, Yael Kanarek, Ellsworth Kelly, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Helen Lundeberg, Richard Misrach, Quayola, Michal Rovner, Fritz Scholder, Muzae Sesay, David Benjamin Sherry, Yinka Shonibare, Elias Sime, Jennifer Steinkamp, Penelope Umbrico, Woody Vasulka, Will Wilson, and Marina Zurkow.

Project Venue and Setting
The Thoma Collection (formerly Art Vault) is a space dedicated to presenting ongoing rotations of artworks from the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation collection. Works on view represent the full range of disciplines in the collection, including painting, sculpture, photography, light art, and works on paper, with particular emphasis on time-based media and digital art.

Philanthropists Carl and Marilynn Thoma opened this Santa Fe location as a public destination for local and international audiences to experience a world-class collection firsthand. The collection is also on view at the Foundation’s Dallas headquarters and has been loaned to leading institutions including LACMA, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Blanton Museum of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art.

SciArt Santa Fe, founded in 2019, fosters artists across disciplines that reflect the cultural diversity of New Mexico, supports research that addresses issues that disproportionately affect people of under-represented races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, national origins, citizenship statuses and ages including climate change, species extinction and migration, that often do not fit within a traditional gallery framework.
