It’s 1988: three teenagers from Sacramento, California – childhood friends, skateboarders, and metalheads – start jamming together in a garage and calling themselves Deftones. By 2000, they were a quintet with global repute as “the Radiohead of metal” and as the progenitors of nu-metal (no matter how empathically they rejected this label). Drawing inspiration from a diverse swath of rock and metal bands, their music never stopped evolving, known for its percussive vocals, ambiguous lyrics, and a raw, organic fusion of genre.
