School of Engineering Inaugural Lectures

The School of Engineering at the University of Galway are delighted to invite you to the Inaugural Lectures of Professor Maeve Duffy and Professor Rory Monaghan on Thursday, November 28 at 6:00 PM.

Professor Maeve Duffy is originally from Bundoran in Donegal. She completed BE and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering at the University of Galway. After more than four years of postdoctoral research at the Tyndall National Institute, she returned as a Lecturer to Galway in 2001. She has been the Director of the Power Electronics Research Centre since 2017, leading projects for energy and biomedical applications, most of which involve industry collaboration. In 2022 she led the successful application of the School of Engineering Athena Swan Silver Award as the School’s Director for EDI. Maeve is married to John, and they have two daughters, Anna and Lorna. Her lecture is titled "The magic of magnetics and power electronics: from wireless charging to enabling cancer treatment".

Professor Rory Monaghan is a Professor in Energy Systems Engineering at the University of Galway and Head of Mechanical Engineering. He leads the Erin Research Group, which investigates green hydrogen and other technologies to decarbonise society’s energy use. Rory is a Co-Principal Investigator in MaREI, the SFI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine Research, and leads the Energy Research Centre at the University of Galway Ryan Institute. He is the Coordinator of the EU-funded SH2AMROCK project to establish the first hydrogen valley in Ireland. Rory was raised in Galway, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received Master’s and PhD degrees in the same field from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rory lives in Moycullen with his wife, Sinéad, and kids, Siún (9) and Liam (11), where he helps run the local basketball club. His lecture is titled "Research-led rollout of Ireland's first green hydrogen valley".
