Scholars in Dialogue: Science and Technology Education In Brazil

Join us for the launch of Scholars in Dialogue, a new series of academic conversations connecting Brazilian doctoral students with renowned scholars, philosophers, activists, and professionals. This initiative is a collaboration between the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies and the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab (TLTL) at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Our first session, titled “Science and Technology Education in Brazil,” will feature two distinguished guests:

Dr. Carolina Soterio

Doctoral Researcher in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and creator of Lab-on-a-Book, a low-cost, paper-based chemistry kit. Her work explores emancipatory approaches to science and technology learning, focusing on how learners reconfigure tools, spaces, and narratives to make science their own. Drawing on constructionism and critical pedagogy, she investigates student-centered and non-canonical forms of engagement with science—from hands-on experimentation to playful uses of technology. Carolina is also a member of the Paulo Freire Initiative at Columbia and has led science communication and sustainability initiatives in Brazil and internationally.

Luiza Toledo

Executive Director of the Telles Foundation and Instituto Apis, Luiza leads cross-sector strategies to expand access to quality education in Brazil. With a background in Psychology, she has completed leadership training at Fundação Dom Cabral and an executive education program on social innovation and impact at Stanford University. Her work focuses on building collaborations that bridge philanthropy, public policy, and technology to improve learning opportunities and expand college access for low-income students.
