In "Cut, Paste, Imagine", participants step into the role of creative researchers, using scissors, glue and curiosity to invent entirely new creatures through collage. By cutting, layering, and recombining found images, textures, and unexpected materials, you’ll splice together animals, objects and environments to create a hybrid being that feels strange, powerful, and alive with story.
This workshop treats collage as a creative experiment; part art making, part world-building. Guided prompts and fast-moving exercises encourage play, bold choices, and happy accidents. Perfection is left at the door; curiosity and risk-taking take the lead. If you’ve ever wondered what might happen when imagination gets a lab coat, this is your chance to find out.
By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a completed creature collage and a short piece of original creature lore, revealing its origins, abilities, and secrets. Expect surprises, unexpected combinations, and the thrill of making something that has never existed before. No prior art experience required.
WORKSHOP FOCUS
·Inventive collage making through using magazines, textures, and unexpected materials to construct hybrid forms
·Creative play and experimentation by encouraging bold choices and improvisation
·Imaginative creature design through combining animals, objects, and environments to invent new beings
·Visual storytelling and mythology by developing a short narrative about the creature’s origins, abilities and habitat
·Process over perfection by prioritizing curiosity, risk-taking and discovery in the art making process

M. Florine Démosthène is a Haitian-American contemporary artist known for her striking mixed-media collages, paintings, and installations that explore identity, spirituality, migration, and the experiences of Black women. Raised between Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and New York, Démosthène creates dreamlike figures using materials such as Mylar, ink, and glitter, blending influences from Haitian culture, mythology, and the African diaspora. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
