Advanced Scent Work Class
This class builds upon the foundation developed in our Intro and Intermediate Scent Work programs. It is intended for Dog & Handler teams already imprinted on Birch (or another approved sport odor) and actively working through a structured scent work progression.
Pre-requisites:
Completion of our Intro or Intermediate Scent Work programs
OR recommendation from your previous Scent Work instructor
If you did not attend our prior classes, please contact us to discuss your team’s experience before registering.
The goal of the Advanced program is to elevate teams from intermediate-level proficiency to more advanced scent detection challenges. We will continue refining foundational skills while introducing new concepts such as:
Buried odor detection (e.g., sand or water)
Threshold hides
Wind and environmental problem-solving
Search scenarios will span Interior, Exterior, and Vehicle environments, mimicking real-life detection tasks and increasing both challenge and realism.
Following our crawl-walk-run methodology, this course introduces more complex problems in a deliberate and thoughtful progression. Key focus areas include:
Advanced leash handling and timing
Strategic search area management
Building and layering advanced problem-solving skills
Instruction is differentiated for each team to support progress at an appropriate pace. Our aim is to help you grow in three key areas: dog performance, handler effectiveness, and team cohesion.
This class is tailored for teams training for sport Scent Work, using AKC and NACSW-approved essential oils.
If you are working with other target odors (e.g., explosives, narcotics), please contact us in advance to confirm suitability.
Important Information:
Dogs must be crated in your vehicle. No indoor crating will be available.
If your dog is reactive toward unfamiliar dogs or people, please inform us before attending. We support and encourage use of the red bandana system for visibility.
