SB25-003 Permit to Purchase CPW Firearms Safety Training Course - 3 Day
About this Event
About this course
Colorado law now requires completion of a firearms safety course and a permit to purchase certain semiautomatic firearms. This course is designed to meet the statutory training requirements under SB25‑003 and C.R.S. 18‑12‑116 and follows the curriculum standards established by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
You will receive structured classroom instruction, a written exam, and a hands‑on practical evaluation focused on safe handling, secure storage, and responsible ownership of semiautomatic firearms.
Course format: 12‑hour vs 4‑hour
We offer two course formats to match the law’s requirements:
- 12‑Hour Extended Course (2‑day minimum, 3rd Day is for those with Hunters Safety only)
Required if you have not completed a hunter safety course. This class runs over at least two days and totals 12 hours of instruction plus testing and practical evaluation. - 4‑Hour Basic Course (1 day)
Available to students who have already completed a hunter safety course. This class includes 4 hours of instruction plus the written exam and practical evaluation in a single day.
Breaks will be provided as needed in all classes. Final course hours are dedicated to the written exam, grading, and hands‑on practical.
This class will be over a course of 3 Days from 6pm to 10pm each day.

Demonstration equipment and safety
For in‑class demonstrations, the instructor will provide:
- A non‑firing semiautomatic training prop for safe demonstration of loading, unloading, and handling procedures
- A locking device (cable lock or trigger lock) to demonstrate secure storage methods and proper application of locks
Students are not required to bring their own firearm for classroom demonstrations. No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom. All demonstration equipment is controlled and inspected by the instructor before use. There is no live fire requirement for the permit to purchase. If you would like to book live fire in addition to your Permit to Purchase class that is an additional, optional class.
Written exam
The written exam is administered at the end of the course:
- Students will complete a multiple‑choice exam using a bubble‑sheet answer form.
- Three versions of the exam are used; all bubble sheets are collected at the end of the test.
- A passing score is 80% or higher.
- If you score 79% or below, you will be required to retake the exam using a different version.
- You may retake the exam if you do not pass on the first attempt, subject to time and scheduling constraints set by the instructor.
The instructor will grade the exams and review key questions and concepts with the class.
Hands‑on practical exam (pass/fail)
After submitting your written exam, you will complete a hands‑on practical evaluation focused on safe semiautomatic handling. You must successfully perform the following five actions to pass:
- Remove the magazine.
- Lock the slide or bolt to the rear (open the action).
- Physically and visually check the chamber and magazine well to confirm they are empty.
- Correctly apply a locking mechanism (cable lock, trigger lock, etc.).
- Maintain proper muzzle discipline and trigger‑finger discipline throughout the process.
The practical exam is evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Failure to complete these steps safely and correctly will require remediation and may require you to repeat the practical.
Completion, records, and permits
Students who pass both the written exam and the hands‑on practical will be recorded as having successfully completed the course:
- The instructor will enter passing students into the state database within 3 business days.
- Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs/gun shops) can verify completion through this system when you purchase a qualifying firearm.
- After course completion, you may apply for your Permit to Purchase specified semiautomatic firearms in any Colorado county, regardless of your county of residence. This training is not limited to the county where you live.
Please note: This course is specific to SB25‑003 / C.R.S. 18‑12‑116 and the permit to purchase certain semiautomatic firearms. It does not replace concealed handgun permit training requirements unless explicitly recognized by your sheriff.
