Join Spokane Public Library as we host EWU Professor Travis Masingale, an artist and researcher who has studied and worked with these exciting (and scary?!) new technologies extensively.
Professor Masingale will begin with an introduction of the current state of Artificial Intelligence technology and how it is already impacting our everyday lives.
Then, he will demonstrate what is possible with four different AI platforms: ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, and Chimera Painter.
Finally, audience members will be invited to "design" their own AI creations. Bring a laptop or other device to participate in this portion of the event. As Midjourney (the premiere AI art generator) is hosted on Discord, attendees unfamiliar with Discord may want to register for an account prior to the event.
This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in the intersection of technology and creativity. Whether you are a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, you will leave this workshop with a newfound appreciation for the possibilities of AI in the creative process. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to explore the future of creativity with us!

About the presenter:
An interdisciplinary designer, artist, and educator curious about creativity. Over the past decade, I’ve explored design, art, and technology through a kaleidoscope of higher education and professional dabblings. My work—a re-mix of aesthetics, philosophical visualizations, and emergent experiments—aims to provoke imagination and spark new ways of understanding our world.
When I’m not teaching or parenting, you can find me dreaming about the future of creativity in the age of AI. As an educator, I’m fascinated by how artificial and human intelligence might co-create and collaborate. I believe AI has the power to radically redefine creativity, much like other pivotal innovations (camera obscura anyone?) that came before it. My current work investigates how to empower design educators to harness the potential of AI in fostering the next generation of creators. The key, I think, is balancing human artistry and technology while evolving our methods of learning and making.
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, I hold art, design, and photographic and electronic media degrees. Ultimately, I am a lifelong student pursuing purpose and play. My creative process involves wandering between mediums and ideas, mashing up aesthetics to discover new conceptual connections. Design can delight, provoke, and make a change. Mixed in with a bit of chance, that’s what I aspire to do.
