Plagued by severe headaches and visions of the Mystery Man (Robert Blake), Fred transforms into car mechanic Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty). The guards who find the innocent stranger in the cell have to let Pete go. But it soon turns out that everyone, trapped in their own fate, is lost... on the Lost Highway.
