Registrations are now open for our 2026 ADULT ONLY Program!Saving the Red Ape: A glimpse at wild orangutan life and conservation
In some ways, wild orangutans are a lot like humans - they can adapt to very low food environments and have their first offspring at a later age. In other ways, wild orangutans are different from all the other great apes. As the only non-human great ape outside of Africa, the lives of wild orangutans are fascinating and still hold many mysteries. These apes survive unpredictable food shortages of up to 10 years, have unique social lives, and, well... are red. They're also critically endangered and could be extinct within the next 50 to 100 years if humans don't figure out a way to reverse damage to their habitats. Come learn all about these baffling great red apes and what you can do from home to support their survival.
About the presenter: Dr. Andrea DiGiorgio is a Biological Anthropologist who studies the spaces where humans and non-human primates interact. Her research includes studies about what wild orangutans eat and how this can be used to improve captive orangutan diets, and how wild orangutans react to food scarcity and increasingly frequent and intense fires. She is also beginning research on wild baboon mothers in an increasingly dry climate. Dr. DiGiorgio also studies how social media content impacts primate and wildlife conservation. Dr. DiGiorgio currently teaches biological anthropology and STEM writing courses at Princeton University, and is a postdoctoral researcher at Rutgers University.
