Every thirty-eight minutes, a report of child abuse and neglect is made in Denver County. To the general public, these children are simply Jane Doe or John Doe. This anonymity protects the child, but also makes it easy to distance ourselves from the crisis of child abuse.
DCAC staff give each child an opportunity to tell their story without the fear. Last year, DCAC served over 8,500 individuals. We provided case management, mental health assessments, and treatment for 1,004 clients. Further, DCAC provided 508 forensic interviews and 16,485 victim advocacy sessions, as well as prevention services for 3,468 children, 889 parents, and 339 teachers.
On July 30th in City Park, we will read the names of all 11,418 children reported as abused in Denver County last year. Each name read is a real child who has experienced an unthinkable trauma; to protect their identities, we will replace their real names with ‘Jane Doe’ and ‘John Doe,’ reminding our community that there are real children and stories behind each name.
