You are invited! Join us in Savannah, GA for several exciting shapenote events taking place in collaboration with the 2026 Savannah Music Festival on March 27th-28th.
The main event!
An All-Day Singing will be held in the nave (sanctuary) of Christ Church Anglican, 2020 Bull Street, on Saturday, March 28th. The singing begins at 10am. A traditional “Dinner on the Grounds” will be served at Noon. Local cooks are encouraged to bring food to share. Singing resumes from 1pm until 3pm. We will sing from the new 2025 Edition of The Sacred Harp.
Other events…
Matt and Erica Hinton will present their revised documentary film “Awake My Soul - The Story of The Sacred Harp” on Friday, March 27th, 12:30pm, at the Telfair Museum of Art in presented by the 2026 Savannah Music Festival. A short demonstration singing and Q&A session will take place immediately following the film.
Following the film showing, at 2pm we will reconvene next door in Trinity UMC for a 90-minute singing school led by noted music historian Professor Esther Morgan-Ellis, PhD, of the University of North Georgia. Singers of all experience levels are invited to participate. We will have both The Sacred Harp, 2025 revision and the B. F. White Sacred Harp (Cooper Book) for this gathering.
Later on Friday, at 5pm, there will be a Social get-together featuring BBQ and live music by the May Belles, (location in Savannah's Parkside neighborhood to be announced.)
We will conclude our choral offerings at 9pm on Saturday with a “Southern Harmony Compline Service” in the candlelit nave of Christ Church Anglican. Compline is a short prayer service where participants "say goodnight to God." This 30-minute observance will combine monastic chant with music from the shapenote tradition. Visiting singers are welcome to participate in the choir or just enjoy the ambience. We will conclude the services with the final verse of Number 146 from the Denson book ("Hallelujah") and a benediction of coffee, apple pie, and folk art in the church parlor.
We cordially invite you to join us for one, or ALL, of these exciting sessions.
