About this Event
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
As part of the artists-run workshops at Geary Art Crawl happening this March 7 and 8.
Be the very first to experience a new sound installation by George Rahi–a series of custom-built wooden organ pipes that subtly respond to fluctuations in temperature and humidity of a sauna. Join us for an informal participatory sauna session of hot/cold cycles to listen to the work and hear about its creation directly from the artist.
Bathing suit and towel required; sandals, robe and water bottle recommended. We recommend dressing warmly, as there is no indoor/heated area other than the saunas themselves.
Registration includes access to 2 saunas. Outdoor seating area, fire pit, change tent, and portable washrooms will also be available.
This workshop is facilitated by Public Sweat and George Rahi.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
George Rahi is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, unceded Coast Salish territories. His work spans installation, instrument making, composition, solo + ensemble performance, and works for radio, theatre + public spaces.
Public Sweat is a unique fusion of art and sweat bathing. It’s also an opportunity to be invigorated by heat, bask in the gift of self-care and engage in social connection. Presented by Art Spin as a continuation of their long standing commitment to presenting contemporary art in unexpected spaces as a way to rethink the possibilities of public art, Public Sweat is an ongoing and ever evolving social experiment. It has seen various iterations ranging from pop-up style interventions with the mobile sauna in various neighbourhoods and events in Toronto, as well as touring throughout Southern Ontario and most recently Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2023 Art Spin presented the Public Sweat festival, the creation of an art and sauna village, that was presented for 7 weeks at the Harbourfront Centre.
