All work parties gather at the Museum of Badger Army Ammunition. There we gather equipment, and then form a caravan, or carpool to the work site of the day.
Worksite locations will vary, but are usually on the DNR owned parcel. With the banning of the use of prescribed fire specifically on the Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area, your efforts as a volunteer land steward are more important than ever.
Our worksites are outdoors, in sometimes rugged terrain. We highly advise participants to dress in clothing that will help protect you in the grasslands. Long sleeves pants, and shirts are ideal. Tucking your trousers into your socks, or investing in a nice pair of gaiters, helps to keep critters out of your pants. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing. Thorn resistant gloves are ideal as it seems that most of the invasive brush we tangle with tends to be spicey. Wide brimmed hats help to keep your head cool, and sunglasses really help with the open glare of the sun. Be sure to have sunscreen, bug spray, and whatever emergency medical necessities you may require. It's important to stay hydrated, so a water bottle is important.
Thank you in advance for helping us heal the ancient Sauk Prairie. Your efforts directly support ecological health of unique remnants of a once bio-diverse ecosystem that at once covered nearly 14,000 acres.
