Kick Off Black History Month 2025 With Us!!!
Both of these unique films explore the rich history and invaluable contributions of Black people to city of San Antonio, Texas, but from two different timeframes and perspectives.
This is a double feature. View both films for the price of one!
WALK ON THE RIVER
đď¸đ The original Walk on the River takes us on a journey of establishing communities, churches, and schools in the 1800s to the rise of thriving Black-owned businesses during the Jim Crow era. It covers the time frame of Emancipation (1865) to the Civil Rights era (1965) approximately 100 years of history.This highly regarded film discusses business, politics, education, social organizations and community all in an attempt to paint a vivid picture of life for Black San Antonio from a past era to help create a knowledge base, a sense of pride and a blueprint for the next generations moving forward.
WALK ON THE RIVER 2.0
đŤđ¨đžâđź Walk on the River 2.0 speaks to the presence and influence people of African descent have had in this area before enslavement. Spain was ruled by the Moors (tribes from North Africa) for over 700 years and they influences Spanish culture and society. That African influence as well as people of African decent were brought here to the Americas through colonization when Spanish settled what is now San Antonio.This documentary dives into discussions surrounding:
- The Africans traveling to the Americas before Columbus
- The Moors in Spain
- Blacks at the Battle of the Alamo
- Slavery in San Antonio⌠and more
The film series features interviews with influential elders including:
- Mario Salas
- Runoko Rashidi (RIP)
- Ed Glosson
- Dr. Rudyard Hilliard
- Nettie Hinton
- Lon Taylor
- Vera Williams Young
- D.L. Grant
