These talented individuals will share their unique skills through hands-on workshops and demonstrations, allowing participants to learn from some of the best in the field. Whether you're looking to refine your technique or explore new styles, these sessions provide an invaluable opportunity to connect with experienced riggers and gain insights that can develop your skills.
About Haruteru and Rose
Haruteru started shibari in 2006 in Melbourne with a workshop by Satomi. In 2009 he went to Japan for the first time to continue learning, having his first lesson with Yukimura sensei in 2010. He returned at least annually to have intensive lessons with Yukimura sensei, as well as hosting him in Melbourne. In 2014 he was given the name Haruteru (春輝), or Spring Radiance, and an Instructors Licence, being one of few people globally given permission to teach Yukimura ryū. He has been teaching Yukimura ryū typically twice a week since then, including currently to students who have been learning 10+ years - it is a style that has great depth and where there is always more to learn.
Yukimura sensei passed away in 2016. Haruteru has continued evolving the underlying concepts while still being true to what he learnt in Japan, with this being in line with what Yukimura sensei told him “There is Yukimura ryū, you need to make Haruteru ryū”.
Rose was introduced to shibari in Germany in 2018 whilst living abroad. Upon her return to Australia in 2022, Rose settled in her native Adelaide (Kaurna yerta) and commenced rope instruction at Shibari Adelaide both tying and modelling Akechi ryū shibari. Rose met Haruteru in 2023 as she sought to expand her aibunawa ("caressing rope") practice. She is honoured to be a student of Haruteru, a lifelong pursuit, and to collaborate with him as teaching model to introduce people to the subtleties and beauty of Yukumura ryū.
About the Style
Yukimura ryū is the shibari style developed and taught by the late Yukimura Haruki (1948-2016). Unlike other styles of shibari, the primary focus of Yukimura ryū is the feelings of the person being tied, that they have the space to express their feelings during the process of tying, and the two-way communication, including through the rope, to achieve this. There is a minimal focus on specific patterns or a specific end look. It is inward rather than outward looking, instead focusing on the small, very subtle changes during tying that can create big changes in the feeling for the person being tied.
The majority of the tying is done on the floor. There are only a limited number of patterns and sequences used to train, and while they are ostensibly technically simple compared to other styles they are challenging to do well.
The Workshops
Given the more intimate nature of Yukimura ryū, both the person tying and being tied should be comfortable with this. These workshops are suitable for all levels as long as you can do a single column tie and are comfortable tying sitting on the floor.
The workshops will focus on tying based on feeling and connection rather than focusing on technical rope skills and series of new patterns. They will show for both parties completely new ways of thinking about rope and what “communication” can really mean. The intent is to plant a series of new seeds for attendees to go away with, explore, and grow, and that will be applicable to any way of tying.
Over the course of the two workshops, we will cover the following topics:
· principles of tying, including relative body positioning and direction of energy (ki/chi)
· use of the nawajiri (rope end) as a means of communication
· rope handling (sabaku)
· the concept of the conversation
· breaking seiza
· the Yukimura ryū 2-rope gote
· how small changes of the person being tied’s body positioning changes their feeling
· the importance of space, both temporal and spacial
· body manipulation between sitting and lying down (both directions)
· the Yukimura ryū sequence kataashi- kaikyaku (1 leg raised tie)
· how small changes of the person tying’s body position changes the feeling and intent for the person being tied
· the importance of the period before the rope goes on
· the concept of the story
· the concept of resistance
· how the use of noise adds to feeling and the story
· the different kinds of touch (surface vs. intent)
