SATURDAY OCT 24 CONVERSATION CORNER AT KEYS Dave Brubeck: "California Dreamin'" with Simon Rowe
No Ticket Required
Dave Brubeck is one of the 20th century's most loved pianists, bandleaders and composers, and his story is a California story. Born in Concord and raised on a cattle ranch in Ione, he headed to College of the Pacific in Stockton planning to study veterinary science. After the war he studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Oakland, formed his Octet, then launched his Quartet in 1951 and built a following at San Francisco's Black Hawk. By 1954 he was on the cover of Time. 🎹
Our guide is Simon Rowe, Keys co-owner, pianist, Hammond organist and one of the foremost authorities on Brubeck. Simon spent five years as executive director of the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific, where he came to know Dave and Iola Brubeck, and was founding director of the San Francisco Conservatory's Roots, Jazz and American Music program.
☕ Keys Café is open for brunch and lunch, 11am–2pm. Come early, grab a table and stay for the conversation.
