A captivating Sattriya dance recital led by Adhyapak Dr. Bhabananda Barbayan and his disciples, the evening brings alive the devotional spirit, storytelling, and timeless elegance of Assam’s classical tradition.
With the shimmering sound of ankle bells and the reverent hush of tradition, SATRA-KRITI transports audiences into the living heart of Sattriya, one of India’s most evocative classical dance forms. Conceived by Srimanta Sankaradeva in the monasteries of Assam nearly five centuries ago, Sattriya was crafted as a vessel for devotion, storytelling, and artistic discipline, a tradition that today finds new resonance on the contemporary stage.
Helmed by the internationally acclaimed Adhyapak Dr. Bhabananda Barbayan and his talented disciples, Tina Kalita and Pari Devi Seal, the recital is a journey through time and faith. The evening opens with Isha Vandana, a lyrical invocation that draws the audience into a world where the divine and the everyday intermingle. Sutradhari Nach brings dramatic flair and narrative power, as myth and movement entwine through solo artistry. The mood shifts in Chali & Chor-dhara, where feminine grace and Krishna’s childhood mischief fill the stage with both elegance and playful spirit. The finale, Nrishimha Lila, is a tour de force of rhythm and theatre, retelling the legendary story of Prahlada and the miraculous intervention of Lord Vishnu.
From expressive abhinaya to the intricate patterns of Ojapali, the recital is steeped in the philosophy and poetry that have made Sattriya a living heritage. Under Dr. Barbayan’s visionary guidance, a master whose scholarship and artistry have brought Sattriya to audiences worldwide, SATRA-KRITI becomes an invitation: step inside a world where devotion is dance, myth is movement, and every gesture is a bridge between the sacred and the human.
