Interpretations of the Past

Helen Carr is medieval historian, history documentary producer and co-editor of ’What is History, Now?’

This groundbreaking new collection addresses the burning issue of how we interpret history today. What stories are told, and by whom? Who should be celebrated, and what rewritten, are questions that have been asked recently not just within the history world, but by all of us.

11.25 - 12.10 Workshop Options

Workshop One – Political Literacy (Education Scotland)

Lynne Robertson from Education Scotland will share the work currently underway on developing political literacy in the classroom.

Workshop Two – Teaching Slavery in Scotland Project – A member of the TSS team will share the resources developed by this year’s team of teachers.

Workshop Three – Poppy Scotland will deliver a workshop on the resources and learning experiences they provide.

Workshop Four – What does it mean to teach about interpretation? Joe Smith, University of Stirling, will deliver a workshop on the teaching of historical interpretations.

Workshop Five – Exploring the 1832 Cholera Outbreak in Glasgow – Megan Coyer and Matthew Creasy will share a resource that they have been developing for the classroom based on the 1832 Cholera outbreak in Glasgow.

13.10 – 14.10 Keynote speaker: Professor Thomas Weber

The World Wars of Disinformation and Demagoguery, Then and Now

Thomas Weber is Professor of History and International Affairs as well as the founding Director of the Centre of Global Security and Governance at the University of Aberdeen. He also is a visiting fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Thomas has recently acted as Historical Consultant for the film ‘Goebbals and the Fuhrer’ focusing on the development and abuse of disinformation, demagoguery, and manipulation by Hitler and Goebbels, and the dynamics culminating in the Shoah and total war.

University academics will share up to date research on each of the five Scottish History topics included at Higher/National 5 level:

· Workshop 1: Scottish Wars of Independence, 1286-1328

· Workshop 2 : The age of the Reformation, 1542–1603

· Workshop 3: The Treaty of Union, 1689–1740

· Workshop 4 : Migration and empire, 1830–1939

· Workshop 5: The impact of the Great War, 1914–1928
