It’s 1971, in the dressing room of Louis Armstrong who has just finished a performance at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. As he gathers himself, his reminiscing takes us as far back as his early life in the Storyville area of New Orleans, his relationship with Joe Glaser, his manager, and the reflections of another great musician, Miles Davis. It is a challenging story told by one actor playing three characters and their individual perspectives of their own and Louis’ journey.
This incredible one man show, done masterfully by James Wheatley, and on the Woodland Opera House’s historic stage, will make you feel as though you are there, right in the midst of this moment of history. The Opera House is so pleased to welcome James back to the theatre. His compelling performance as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in the Woodland Opera House production of Ragtime, during the 2003-2004 season, garnered standing ovations and is still recalled as a favorite.
James Wheatley is the founder and Artistic Director of Celebration Arts. He is producer and director serving at the helm of plays and concerts, teaches dance classes, choreographs for the Celebration Dance Company, trains and coaches singers, writes music for Celebration Arts performances. His acting experience includes roles in Gem of the Ocean and A Christmas Carol at Sacramento Theatre Company, Between Riverside and Crazy at Capital Stage and Aida at the Sacramento Music Circus. Other acting credits include Fences, My Children My Africa, Master Harold and the Boys, Train Driver, The Sunset Limited, Driving Miss Daisy, I’m Not Rapport, and Boseman and Lena. He has also had wonderful roles in the musicals Ragtime, Gospel and Colonus, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The All Night Strut!, Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope, Lost in the Stars, and Pippin.
