Friday, October 17 at 6:30pm, SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! presents a kinky Coffin Joe double feature programmed and introduced by fiction writer , aka the Rat Queen of Chicago! The program will begin with a video show by and three songs about Satan sung live by local musician Heather Brown. Between screenings of exploitation classics THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE (1968) and THE AWAKENING OF THE BEAST (1970), (TSTIL) will provide a crash course in Satanism, and the night will also include a live conversation between Sophie Hinkson and TSTIL. The grand finale will be an Unbaptism Ritual led by TSTIL for all attendees who wish to participate! 😈

José Mojica Marins directed the first Brazilian-produced horror film, AT MIDNIGHT I'll TAKE YOUR SOUL (1964), and also starred in the film as the main antagonist, Coffin Joe, who always makes a splash with his black top hat and cape, his imposing unibrow, and his grotesquely long and curled fingernails. The character appeared in six more films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appeared as a horror host on television from the 1960s through the 1980s, and returned to the big screen one last time in EMBODIMENT OF EVIL (2008).
THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE (O ESTRANHO MUNDO DE ZÉ DO CAIXÃO) is an anthology with three stories linked by carnal desires with an emphasis on voyeurism and sexual fetishism. In "The Dollmaker," a master craftsman and his four daughters are attacked by goons. In "Obsession," a story told completely without dialogue, a balloon man with a foot fetish goes totally unnoticed as he stalks a woman to the end of her life and beyond. In "Theory," a deranged professor opens his dungeon to a journalist and his wife to prove to the couple that love doesn't exist, and the professor looks an awful lot like Coffin Joe!
In pseudo-documentary THE AWAKENING OF THE BEAST (O DESPERTAR DA BESTA), a psychiatrist claims in a televised conversation with Coffin Joe creator José Mojica Marins that illegal drug use leads to sexual deviancy. After describing various case studies (shown in graphic dramatizations), he assembles four addicts of different social classes for a final experiment with LSD. After he gives everyone their injection, the film switches from black-and-white to color as the participants hallucinate while looking at a poster for THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE!
