Sashiko Afternoon tea Ritual Afternoon: The Merrion hotel and Atelier edo.
About this Event
An afternoon that is just for you
You take care of everyone. Your job. Your family. Your friends. You are last on your own list. This afternoon, someone takes care of you.
When you arrive
You walk into The Merrion Hotel, one of the most beautiful spots in Dublin. The room is already set. Someone thought about you before you got there. A glass of champagne is waiting. You sit down, and for the first time today, nobody needs anything from you.
The tea
The tea comes in a real cup. Not a machine cup. Not a paper cup. A real cup, on a real table, in a beautiful room looking out over Merrion Square. There are pastries, scones, and little sandwiches — the full Merrion afternoon tea. You can just sit and enjoy it.
The stitching
Someone places a few things in front of you. A piece of blue Japanese cloth. A needle. Gold thread. A pattern card. Everything you need is right there. You don't have to bring a thing.
They show you one simple stitch. That is all you need to know. Your hands start to move, and you do it again and again. There is no wrong way. You don't have to be good at art. For three hours, someone gentle guides you, and it is made for people who have never tried before.
What you feel
Soon your shoulders drop. Your headache fades. Your phone stays in your bag, and you forget it is even there. The Wellington Room is just for your small group all afternoon, so it stays quiet and calm. Around you sit other women who feel just like you — tired, busy, last on their own lists. By the end, all the phones are face down, and nobody is reaching for them.
What you take home
You take your finished piece with you. You stitched it with your own hands, and it is yours to keep forever. It is not perfect. Sashiko was never about being perfect. But it is really, truly beautiful, and you made it.
You also take a little handwritten story card. It tells you about your pattern and why people have loved this craft for 400 years. And a music card called The Edo Hour — a calm Japanese playlist, so you can find this quiet feeling again at home.
And one more thing you cannot put in a bag: the feeling that you deserve to be cared for. That you are still whole, under everything you carry. She was in there the whole time.
Why it works
Maybe you tried the apps and stopped after a few days. Maybe you tried yoga or writing in a journal, and it just felt like one more thing to do. You are tired of trying to fix yourself. Sashiko does not ask you to fix anything. It just asks your hands to follow a line. And while your hands are busy, your mind finally lets go.
