A night of original music by two dynamic female artists. Sariyah Idan (singer-songwriter/composer/bandleader), and Maude Caillat (saxophonist/composer/bandleader) will perform two separate sets of music and make appearances in each other's bands.
- From the hills of Woodstock NY, now based in the New Orleans swamps, Sariyah Idan is an awarded singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and captivating performer. Jazz and folk trained, hip-hop educated, and influenced by Latinx/Caribbean sounds and her Jewish roots, she possesses an "ability to seamlessly combine a wide variety of disparate styles and sonics into a memorable sound all her own," (Tinnitist). She views honoring traditions of both influences and ancestors as a form of cultural activism. Her lyricism is hailed as "powerful, soulful, spirited songs filled with stories of struggle, love and social justice" (Fusicology).
Sariyah’s music has featured on NPR, WWOZ, Pacifica, college and online radio. She has rocked iconic venues The Kennedy Center (DC), Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles), Nuyorican Poets Cafe (NYC), PANDA Platforma (Berlin), The Jazz Museum (New Orleans). She produces and hosts the monthly multi-genre round-robin “Songs For The People” benefitting local community organizations. “Breaking Shadows” (2019) her debut solo LP addressing trauma and patriarchy was recorded in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Lisbon. “Glitter & Blood” (2023) focusing on transitions and healing was recorded in New Orleans as a continued collaboration with Berlin engineer Andy Schlegel. Her album "Solo Live In Berlin" will be out in spring 2025 with a few singles dropping this winter.
Ms. Idan has shared stages with legends Pete Seeger, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Yusef Lateef. When not touring or playing local venues she can be found many nights playing the famed busking scene on Royal St. and is known among locals and tourists as “the most hauntingly beautiful voice of the New Orleans’ streets.”
- A renowned saxophonist and female band leader based in New Orleans. A Swiss National living in the United States on the highly-sought-after O-1 visa, granted for her extraordinary musical talent.
Maude Caillat has played music across three continents – including extensively in Senegal and Paris – and has called the New Orleans jazz scene home for the last eight years. During her time in Africa, she studied music and played in some of the continent’s biggest festivals. In New Orleans, she leads multiple bands: the Bras Band (an all-female brass band), The Afrodiziac's Jazz (a 7-piece Ethiopian Jazz group), SingleMaltPlease (a hip-hop and jazz fusion group), and the Maude Caillat Project.
The Project is Maude’s outlet for introducing audiences to an exciting and unique blend of sounds derived from her global study of jazz. With the help of some of the most talented musicians in the New Orleans jazz scene, the Maude Caillat Project offers complex sounds that stun audiences and leaves them with a new framing for the relevance of jazz in the 21st century. Maude Caillat Project shows are a true musical experience, offering sounds that are new, intimate, pure, and - most importantly - without rules.
