Sarah Morris has a habit of missing the forest. From the day she picked up a guitar, the Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter has been busy crafting love letters to the trees. Moreover, Morris’ endearingly honest, expertly penned songs encourage audiences to pull away from the big picture. Here, we are invited to get caught up in the magic of our everyday minutia. The rainy-day ache in her sunlit voice grants us permission to escape into stories at once hauntingly familiar and uniquely her own.
In 2023, Sarah Morris released her fifth album of original material, Here’s To You, shedding some country swagger. To that end, she incorporates a lusher, more celestial sound. With layers of harmonies and synths orbiting her band’s guitar, bass and drums, Morris’ clarion voice shines brightly. Thus, whether they’re celebration songs, grief songs or gift songs, you feel devotion to her craft in every line.
Sarah won the 2018 Kerrville New Folk contest. Also, she recently earned third place at the 2023 Songwriter Serenade. Additionally, she was chosen as a finalist for Telluride Troubadour. Furthermore, she took second place at the 2016 MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Competition.
Dylan Hicks & Small Screens play exploratory pop with literary ambitions and far-flung musical influences ranging from jazz to folk. The group’s latest album, 2024’s Modern Flora, is a set of songs arranged for an expanded nine-piece lineup. Further, All About Jazz called it “fascinating and engaging”. Hicks, the group’s pianist and singer-songwriter, brings together some of the best players in Twin Cities improvised music. Here, saxophonist Christopher Thomson, cellist Michelle Kinney, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Dan Carpel, and drummer Peter Hennig comprise the band.
