Sarah McQuaid is thrilled to be featured on the bill for the prestigious Fort Worth Songwriter Festival. In addition to her Friday concert set (tentatively set to take place in the Rose Chapel at 5pm, with doors at 3pm), Sarah will also be presenting a FREE one-hour workshop on “Telling Stories Through Songs” in partnership with the Fort Worth Public Library, in the Rose Chapel at 10am on Saturday 8 November.
What is it in a story – whether it be a fairytale, a historical event or a recent news item – that makes it worthy of a song? A strong image? A phrase that resonates? An added layer of metaphorical meaning? Is there a message we’re trying to deliver? What are the elements (chronological, geographical, thematic) of the story and how will they determine the structure of the song we write? Does the story have a climax? A repetitive theme? A dramatic twist? Who tells the story? How do we turn a straightforward narrative into poetic lyrics that the listener will remember and want to hear again and again? Taking a stack of recent daily newspapers as our starting point, we find a story and look at how we can turn it into a song. Participants are also invited to bring along their own compositions to share with the group, if they wish!
Sarah McQuaid has released six critically acclaimed solo albums, plus an album as a duo with Zoë Pollock, writer and performer of 1991 UK Top 5 hit single “Sunshine On A Rainy Day” featuring songs co-written by the pair under the band name Mama. Her latest album The St Buryan Sessions, recorded and filmed live in a beautiful medieval church near her home in Cornwall, was described by Acoustic Guitar magazine as “an instant classic.”
Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England, Sarah brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material. Her music invites reflection, connection, and a deep appreciation of the quiet power of a well-crafted song.
