The play Saragu explores how the intersection of religion and politics creates a storm in the lives of ordinary people in a village called Shrirampura.
For generations, Obalappa’s family has sustained itself through their traditional occupation of shoemaking, finding shade and support under the Peepal tree in the town square. However, a stone unexpectedly discovered at the base of that tree on a rainy night changes the village forever. The local priest and political leaders give the stone a religious color, plotting to cut down the tree to build a temple.
In between all this, Obalappa’s son, Mada, falls into the trap of the village’s political power-players. Amidst internal family conflicts and the conspiracies of the local elite, how will Obalappa save his cultural identity? And how will Mada eventually find his way back to support his father`s struggle?
Reflecting Ambedkarite ideals and feminist sensibilities, the play depicts how political tactics used in the name of religion create divisions among innocent minds.
