12PM: Freshwater
Synopsis: Freshwater is a documentary that dives into the cold waters of Lake Superior along Minnesota's North Shore. It contains 10% of Earth's freshwater, yet this massive force of nature remains largely unexplored. One group of people, however, is intimately aware of its power. From the surfers who catch its waves to the scientists who study its depths, learn why Lake Superior is a precious resource that should never be taken for granted.
2:30PM: 93 - Letters From Marge
Synopsis: The film chronicles stories from Calhoun's adventurous life that began in a little Hollywood cottage to her last days while sitting in her home next to a picture window with views to the sea and Morro Bay, CA. Though age had taken a toll on her body, Marge’s mind was sharp and could take her anywhere she wanted to go!
Screening with: Nā Kama Kai - Children Of The Ocean
Synopsis: Nā Kama Kai (Children of the Ocean) is a short documentary about a non-profit’s mission to empower youth through ocean-based education, with the goal of cultivating environmental stewardship and building future community leaders. While traveling to Brazil for their first international clinic, participants quickly realize the many ways the ocean connects us rather than divides us.
4:45PM: Surf Nation
Synopsis: As China trains its first generation of Olympic surfers, two promising young athletes - Alex and Lolo - navigate adolescence, freedom, and their love of the sport.
Lolo, a young woman, decides against a university education and an office job in favor of a surfing life. Alex, the best surfer in China, recognizes that his future lies outside of the national team structure and pushes against the team’s collective goal of the Olympics.
Everyone remembers breaking away at some point in their lives - maybe as a teenager or maybe later. Those choices are filled with risk and doubt, especially when parents and coaches might have other ideas about what constitutes success. The path can seem harder yet impossible not to take.
7PM: Keep It A Secret
Synopsis: Keep It A Secret recounts the inspiring true story of the dawn of Irish surfing and how the sport’s brave pioneers found peace in the surf during the most violent years of The Troubles conflict. For these surfers, there were no borders, only the endless freedom of the ocean. Keep It A Secret is a chronicle of boundless idealism in the midst of a violent conflict. It will take us on a stunningly beautiful ride through rough waters to reveal how surfing gave an exceptional collection of young people hope at a time of bitter despair; how the sport would forever change their lives; and how the tight-knit, rebellious community they formed would leave a lasting impression upon Ireland.
9:15PM: EUFORIA
Synopsos: EUFORIA is an audiovisual journey that accompanies Sebastian Williams along the Pacific coast of Mexico in search of perfect waves, hidden places and mythical landscapes. It is through the music, sound and images that the emotions of the ocean are represented.
Screening with
Hunros Jorna - Recollections in Atlantic Reverie
Synopsis: An experimental Cornish language film by Allan Wilson & Mickey Smith.
Screening with: Mami Wata Surf - Luck is Alive
