About this Event
After lauded performances with Opera Philadelphia and The BroadStage, Madison Avenue Baptist Church is proud to present the New York premiere of SANKOFA PROJECT: A JOURNEY THROUGH BLACK MUSIC AND ARTISTRY.
In the West African tradition, the Adinkra symbol of “Sankofa” depicts a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth. The word and symbols are most commonly understood to mean “looking back to move forward”.
Sankofa Project: A Journey Through Black Music and Artistry explores the rich tapestry of vocal music created and performed by African Americans. Along with the powerful music, audiences will be treated to the inspiring histories of legendary artists such as Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, and more through narration and dramatic interpretation. The acclaimed members of the Sankofa Quartet; four young HBCU alumni artists, will be joined by some surprise guests for a special celebration of Gospel Music Heritage Month.
Proceeds go to support the 105 Voices of History National HBCU Choir and the Artists.
Performers include:
