Smitalay,a premier Odissi dance institute of the city has been hosting the Sanjukta Panigrahi Yuva Mahotsav for the past twenty one years. In this year’s 22 nd edition of the festival, six young Indian classical dancers of the country will perform and the Smitalay repertory dancers will also present a new production called Dastaan Veer Sant Shivaji ki.
The six artists performing solo for this festival are as follows:
- Ananya Parida, an accomplished Odissi dancer from Bhubaneshwar who has been practising this dance form for the past twenty-two years. She began learning Odissi from the tender age of four under the tutelage of Shri Yudhishtir Nayak and Smt.Rojalin Mohapatra. She was further groomed by Padma Shri Guru Smt. Aruna Mohanty. She is recognised as a B-grade artist of Doordarshan and an empanelled artist of Spic Macay. She has performed in many cities and festivals in India and abroad.
- Dipjoy Sarkar, a promising young Odissi dancer from Kolkata, a disciple of Guru Smt.Sharmila Biswas. He got a first-class distinction in Odissi at the Rabindra Bharati University. He also secured first position in an Odissi dance competition organised by the West Bengal state music academy. He has been a part of his Guru’s dance company for the last seven years and is performing extensively with them.
- Raja Dutta, a promising young Bharatnatyam dancer from Kolkata who began his initial training under Smt.Anita Mallick. He is now training under Padmabhushan C.V.Chandrashekhar. He stood first in a Bharatnatyam competition organised by the West Bengal State Music Academy and has won many awards and accolades. He has performed in many dance festivals all around the country.
- Nandini Ganesan is a Bharatnatyam dancer, teacher and choreographer from Mumbai. She is the granddaughter of Guru Shri Kalasadan Mani. She had her initial training from her mother, Smt. Sarada Ganeshan and uncle Shri Natrajgopal.She is doing her advanced training under Padmashri Guru Smt. Chitra Visveswaran. She is a Doordarshan-graded artist and empanelled with the ICCR. She has performed extensively in India and abroad.
- Vedanti Bhagwat Mahadik is a Kathak dancer from Pune. She began her initial training under Smt. Archana Sunjay and Madhurita Sarang. She is now learning from Smt. Rajashree Shirke. She is the recipient of the Nalanda Nritya Nipun Award 2022. One can see glimpses of the Lucknow and Jaipur gharana in her performance because she has learnt both these styles.
- Tejashree Vaidya is a Kathak dancer from Mumbai. She is the disciple of Guru Ranjana Phadke. She has won many prizes in solo dance competitions at the National level. She has also performed extensively both as a solo artist and as part of different groups.
- Dastaan Veer Sant Shivaji ki is a group presentation by the dancers of Smitalay. It portrays important episodes from Shivaji’s life. This piece is choreographed by Guru Smt. Jhelum Paranjape and the music is composed and arranged by Bunckim.
