Want to fix up your hardwood floors but don’t know how to do it yourself? In this weekend workshop you’ll learn from an expert about what a project like this entails, from visioning it out to the nitty gritty of sanding techniques and finishing options.Day 1 (3/1/24 from 3-6pm) will go over how to use the Tool Library’s floor sanding equipment, including choosing the right tool and how to use it safely. The instructor will demonstrate how to use a drum sander and edger without leaving marks, hurting your back, or damaging the floor. Other topics we’ll cover include dust control, choosing and changing sandpaper, understanding your floor, and dealing with corners and other tricky spots.
Day 2 (3/2/24 from 3-6pm) will focus on finishing your floor. We’ll cover buffing, cleanup, and choosing the right finish, including color, application methods and expectations, and why not to stain your hardwood. And finally, you’ll learn best practices for cleaning and maintaining a hardwood floor so that you never have to do this again!

This class will not have time to get into specific project questions; however, participants are encouraged to bring photos and questions that may be useful to go over as examples. Instructor Kadee Macey is the former owner and sander training coordinator for Pete's Hardwood Floors, a unique (but, sadly, now closed) St. Paul business that specialized in hands-on coaching of first-time DIYers in installation, sanding, refinishing, and repair of hardwood flooring, with a special emphasis on historic floors. She has written for Family Handyman Magazine and the Twin Cities Bungalow Club and has been featured in Wood Floor Business magazine.
