Exploring the Beauty of Holiness in Stained Glass through Poetry
Lead by: Len Mattano
10-11am Opening talk
Discussion on the history of the sonnet and the mechanism of the form, with particular attention to ‘holy sonnets’ and sonnets on Divine Love and the spiritual life. Sonnets of Shakespeare, St. Robert Southwell, Michelangelo, John Donne and others will be considered. This session will be led by Dr. Varholy.
11am-Noon
Talk on ‘Ways of Seeing’ and the narrative of sanctity told in the history of stained glass windows in ecclesiastical art. This talk will involve a presentation of photography from Dr. Mattano’s portfolio of images capturing the beauty of stained glass. The session will be led by Dr. Mattano.
Noon-1pm Lunch at Enders House
A warm two-course meal is included in the price of the class.
1-1:30pm Sonnet Writing Seminar
Dr. Mattano and Dr. Varholy will help lead the group in a collaborative discussion on one of the windows and a ‘group sonnet’ inspired by one of the stained glass windows at Enders Island after showing a demonstration sonnet describing one of them. The strategy will involve thinking creatively as a team and learning how to describe a visual work of art lyrically and then set it in the form of a traditional sonnet.
1:30-3:30pm Sonnet Writing Time
The group will be led to the chapel and the writing time will begin with praying “Come Holy Ghost,” and then everyone will be spread throughout the chapel praying and writing a sonnet in silence inspired by the stained-glass windows in the chapel.
3:30-4pm Conclusion
The sonnets will be read out loud. Plans for a sonnet ‘chapbook’ will be discussed. The session will conclude with a prayer of thanksgiving.
