His album, “Introducing the Hardline”, was an international success. In 1988 Wishing Well hit number one in the U.S.A. Sign Your Name followed it into the Top Five and the album sold 14 million copies worldwide. His mix of soul, rock, pop, and R&B recalled Prince, yet his sensibility was grittier and earthier. In 1989 “Neither Fish nor Flesh”, attacked many self-consciously important themes, including homophobia and environmental destruction. Since 1995, at the age of 33, he adopted the name Sananda Maitreya, which is his artistic name since 2001.
