About this Event
This will be an informal "meet and greet". We will have introductions shortly after 7PM so try not to be too late, plus we may play a game or two, but there is no formal agenda - stay for as short, or as long a time as you want. Here's a link to the menu if you want to eat there. https://harbortownpub.com/pages/daily-menu-san-diego
They have appetizers, burgers, burritos and sanwiches. It looks good and everything is less than $20. The Harbor Town Pub looks like fun. They have old fashioned arcade games and pinball machines, and even have a section for dogs if you want to bring your support mutt. This event is free and open to all adults with ADHD and our allies. Hope to see you there.
The Return of the Sun
(a reason to celebrate - optional read)
The date December 22nd is significant for more than just "last-minute holiday shopping": it is also one day after the Winter Solstice. In ancient times, the gradual loss of daylight at this time of year must have terrified the primitive people living then, because they had no way of knowing for sure that the light would ever return. They thought the days would keep getting shorter and shorter, their crops would fail, hunting would become impossible, and they would die in darkness.
Eventually, however, with their crude instruments and methods, they learned that after half a year of slowly moving along the horizon, the sun appears to rise and set in almost the same spot for several days. The retreat of the sun would stop, and the days would gradually get longer.
The day that these people had discovered came to be known as the winter "solstice", which comes from the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still". We tend to think of the Solstice as being about darkness, but it is really about light. The days were getting longer again; the world was not ending - the sun was returning, and there was hope.
People can get a little down during the holidays - lots of people are away from their families, and it is especially difficult if you are alone. Others may have to deal with relatives and family members they would rather not deal with, so things can get a little stressful. That's why on this day I like to pause and remember that while things may still be dark, it will be getting a little lighter each day, and we have hope that our lives can get a little better each day as well.
