About the Band

Community Bands have been an enduring part of Americana. The San Diego City Guard Band proudly continues that tradition. Based at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park, we serve San Diego region, and have, historically, acted as cultural ambassadors in performances in the U. S.

The present-day City Guard Band stands as a memorial to the first San Diego Municipal Band.

The San Diego City Guard Band, an all-volunteer community band, invites musicians of all ability levels to join its quality performing group. If you have band experience, we may have a place for you. A wide range of music is performed, from historical works, show tunes, movie scores and marches to concert pieces for symphonic band. Band membership is open to anyone over 18 years of age, based on instrumentation needs. There are no auditions for new members.

The Band's membership consists of amateurs, music educators, and professional musicians ranging in age from “18 to 80” and beyond. Today, the Band includes approximately 40 musicians, who rehearse once each week and perform at various locations in Balboa Park as well as other venues around the region, Rehearsals are every Tuesday, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, in the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.
