About this Event
Are you an aspiring scientist? Do you enjoy learning about our natural world through science and data? Come and join the San Antonio River Authority's Environmental Science team in gathering scientific data at Hendrick Arnold Nature Park!
Over the course of 3 days, you will be able to participate in one or multiple different biological surveys including:
- Birds
- Bats
- Plants & Trees
- Butterflies
- Nocturnal Invertebrates
- Amphibians & Reptiles
Want to just come out and learn from a River Authority scientist? There are also educational, guided walks and activities available to come and learn about the ecosystems that exist within Hendrick Arnold Nature Park. There is even a Family Scavenger Hunt on Saturday!

Day 1: Thursday, March 20

Bird Survey
Host: San Antonio River Authority
Info: Join local birding experts from the Bexar Audubon Society and River Authority scientists on a birding trail walk! All levels of birding experience welcome! Limited number of binoculars provided, or bring your own.

Walk with a Scientist - Drought Ecology
Host: San Antonio River Authority
Info: Droughts are a fact of life here in Texas. Join us in learning about how drought effects ecosystems by exploring dry creek beds, looking for fish in isolated pools, and learning new ways to conserve water!

Branching Out - Tree Quest
Host: San Antonio River Authority
Info: Join the River Authority scientists on a quest to identify and describe the various woody plant species that call Hendrick Arnold Nature Park their home, and learn of their important role in different ecosystems. On this quest, you will assist in the collection of scientific data as you peruse the trails to find notable and uncommon tree species.

Wildlife Cam - Animal Identification
Host: San Antonio River Authority
Info: Are you curious about what wildlife is around that you can't see? Help us sort through trail camera footage from Hendrick Arnold Park and discover what animals are evading our senses. This activity requires little walking and no experience!

Butterfly Survey
Host: Martin Reid
Info: Join local butterfly expert, Martin Reid, and River Authority scientists on a walk to observe and identify butterflies! Keep an eye out for common mestras, swallowtails, and even skipperlings! This is a no-catch event, but you're welcome to bring cameras and close-range binoculars.

Info: Feeling batty? Join bat experts from Bat Conservation International on a walk on the trails to detect if bats are present in the park and experience nature at night!

Moth & Nocturnal Bugs Survey
Host: Peter Joseph Hernandez
Info: Join Master Naturalist Peter Hernandez and the River Authority scientists to discover the smaller nocturnal animals that are attracted to lights! Beetles, flies, moths, and more with a wide range of shapes, colors, and important roles! No experience needed, just interest! (Great activity to practice your nighttime photography!)

Info: Did you know that soil is teeming with life? And that we have several different types of soil in San Antonio that support different ecosystems? Dig into a unique learning experience with River Authority scientists and learn how to take soil samples, analyze a soil profiles, and identify different soil types and their impact on plants.

On this quest, you will assist in the collection of scientific data as you peruse the trails to find notable and uncommon grasses and flowering plant species.
