Charles E. Williams Sr. was born on May 18, 1937, in Granger, Texas, where he once worked in the cotton fields. In 1957, he moved to San Antonio and began working as a barber, inspired by the strong spirit of Black entrepreneurship he saw in the city.

Over time, Mr. Williams became a pioneering businessman. In 1972, he became the first African American to purchase property on W.W. White Road, opening several successful businesses including a beauty supply store, a car wash (1983),the renowned Williams Barber College (1992), and the Landmark Coffee and Community Meeting Shop (2007), a gathering space for Eastside residents and leaders.

Today, he remains active. He owns and operates the Williams Historical National Museum, a space dedicated to honoring the triumphs and struggles of San Antonio’s Black community and preserving the legacy of Black leadership.
