FAQs >>>
WHO IS MY TEACHER?
Vivio trained under many masters of dance in Havana and is a pioneer of Cuban music and dance in New Zealand. He has taught 1,000s of students since he settled here more than 20 years ago, and is the only formally Cuban-trained dance teacher in Auckland.
Having learnt ballet, contemporary and folkloric dances at the famous National School of Performing Arts (ENA) in Havana from ages 11 to 19, Vivio worked as a professional dancer for 21 years. He was the principal dancer for leading dance companies like Danza Contemporánea de Cuba and Ballet de Camagüey, where he performed and choreographed prestigious shows that travelled the world.
Vivio loves to share his dance knowledge with students and is supported by his partner Justine and other senior students in helping you on your dancing journey. They are all passionate about teaching authentic Cuban dances, whatever your level, giving you a broad dancing experience.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CUBAN SALSA AND LINEAR SALSA?
Salsa is a fusion of dance styles with roots in Cuba — Son, Afro-Cuban Orishas, Cha-Cha-Cha and Mambo — combined with American Jive. The authentic, down-to-earth Cuban style (AKA Casino) that we teach at The Cuban Groove is a relaxed, flowing style where the partners dance around each other in a circle. This makes it different to the LA or NY Salsa styles that you typically see on TV shows, where the partners dance on an imaginary straight line (linear), having been adapted and modified over time for an American audience.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CUBAN-STYLE AND MIAMI-STYLE CUBAN SALSA?
While both styles are rooted in Cuba, Cuban-style tends to highlight the musicality and feeling of the music, with greater emphasis on incorporating other authentic Cuban dance styles, while Miami-style tends to be more focussed on the technicalities of the dance.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO DANCE CLASS?
Be as relaxed or as stylish as you want as long as you feel comfortable.
WHERE CAN I GO SOCIAL DANCING?
There are regular Salsa social nights held around Auckland and The Cuban Groove organises workshops, classes, and performances at parties, events and festivals around New Zealand. For more info, check out our events by Liking and Following us on FB and Insta — @thecubangroove.
We also have a 10-piece band called Ke lo Ke, featuring some Aotearoa's leading Latin and jazz musicians playing beautiful Cuban rhythms for dancing. You can follow them on Facebook — @kelokeband.
CAN I LEARN TO DANCE PRIVATELY?
Yes! If you want individual or smaller group classes, having private tuition is a great way to fast-track your learning, clean up your styling and more gain confidence on the dance floor. Please contact for details about private classes with Vivio.
