Safeguarding Our Cultural Heritage: Archaeology's Role in Environmental Compliance

Join us for a fascinating event discussing how archaeology plays a crucial role in preserving our cultural heritage in the face of environmental challenges. Learn from experts in the field about the importance of protecting our past for future generations. The event will occur in person at VHB's Tucker Office at 3772 Pleasantdale Rd, Suite 195. Our speaker, Dr. Jera Davis, is an anthropological archaeologist with over 20 years of experience. She specializes in the PreColumbian archaeology of the Eastern United States, having published research that explores how ancient communities redesigned towns to promote a shared identity and how shamans cultivating hallucinogenic plants paved the way for subsistence agriculture. As a cultural resources professional, she has conducted numerous projects in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and NEPA. Jera manages VHB's Archaeology Laboratory in Tucker, Georgia, and is the interim team lead.

There will be a chance to visit the archaeology lab as well.

Lunch will be provided by VHB and there will be a chance to tour their archaeology lab. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to speak with a representative from the Society for Georgia Archaeology (SGA) and Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (GCPA), co-sponsors of this event, to learn their roles in Georgia's cultural resources preservation and how to become involved with them if interested.
