Aims of the Course
To ensure Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) within early years settings understand their statutory safeguarding responsibilities and are
able to support staff and the setting to create a safe culture and environment for children, families and staff in line with EYFS Annex C and local
safeguarding expectations.
Learning Objectives
By the end, participants will be able to:
1. Define safeguarding and child protection and explain the difference
2. Understand the principles of safeguarding and the legislation, statutory guidance, local and national policies, and professional standards
that underpin practice
3. Identify categories of abuse, harm, neglect, and contextual safeguarding risks
4. Respond, record, and refer safeguarding concerns and allegations appropriately and in line with EYFS Annex C
5. Assess immediate risk and understand thresholds of intervention
6. Apply whistleblowing procedures and manage concerns about colleagues
7. Understand multi-agency safeguarding roles, including LADO, Social Care, Police, and the LSCP
8. Understand the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead
9. Promote a safe organisational culture, safe recruitment, and online safety
10. Identify practical actions to take back to their own provision to strengthen safeguarding practice
